Finnish Minerals Group (FMG) is a government owned special-purpose company targeting at responsibly maximising the value of Finnish minerals. FMG works as an active owner of the mining and battery industry companies in Finland as well as a technological developer of the battery value chain. The mission of Finnish Minerals Group is to responsibly maximise the value of Finnish minerals. FMG manages the State’s mining industry shareholdings and strives to develop the Finnish value chain of lithium-ion batteries. In addition, they are engaged in long-term technology development of the mining and battery industry. Through this work, FMG contributes to Europe moving towards electric transport and a more sustainable future.
FMG is the main shareholder of Terrafame Ltd. which is a multi-metal company producing primarily nickel and zinc by bioheapleaching at its mine located in Sotkamo, Finland. In August 2015, Terrafame acquired the business operations and assets of Talvivaara Sotkamo Ltd. from its bankruptcy estate and is now carrying on the mining operations in Sotkamo. Terrafame’s objective is environmentally-sustainable, safe and economically-viable mining operations. The ramp-up of the Terrafame mine in 2015 and 2016 has proceeded better than planned. Terrafame employs on average approximately 650 skilled professionals. In addition, 550 employees from excavation contractors and other partner companies work at the mine regularly.
